A new housing law signed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer will soon prohibit landlords with five or more properties from discriminating against renters based on their income sources. The law, set to take effect in April, aims to protect tenants who rely on non-wage income such as housing vouchers, Social Security, disability, or veteran benefits.

Julie Cassidy, a senior policy analyst with the Michigan League for Public Policy, emphasized the importance of housing vouchers, saying, “Housing is just so critical to every other aspect of our lives, especially for children, and so we really need to be sure that people can use the assistance that is available to them.”
