League condemns executive actions that undermine civil rights, threaten harm to marginalized groups

LANSING—The Michigan League for Public Policy condemns the new federal administration’s early attacks on healthcare, immigrants, the LGBTQIA+ community, equity initiatives and more. The statement below can be attributed to League president and CEO Monique Stanton.

“Today, we are one week into a new federal administration, and in that week, the actions and threats from this leadership are deeply concerning for many Michiganders. The barrage of executive orders from the new administration is dangerous and shameful.

“The Michigan League for Public Policy prides itself on nonpartisanship and a deep commitment to creating economic and social justice in our state. In our 114-year history, our organization has seen great progress made for Michiganders. But in just seven days, so much has been undone and so much fear has been sown.

“From undermining access to healthcare and basic needs to reversing equity initiatives to attacks on the immigrants who call our state home, the administration is purposely putting families, workers, and marginalized people in harm’s way. The efforts being made to redefine civil rights protections are not only unjust, but also a direct affront to the principles of fairness and inclusion that we hold dear. Policies that strip away protections and consolidate power weaken our democracy and violate the trust placed in our leaders to serve all of us.

“We know that unleashing dozens of orders at once is a propaganda tactic designed to exhaust advocates and pit people against each other. But we will not be exhausted. We vow to fight against these and other vicious attacks that create fear and harm our communities. At the League, we will continue to use data, community input and nonpartisan values to create a Michigan where everyone can prosper and belong. We urge leaders and policymakers in Michigan to do all they can to protect the rights and dignity of every person, regardless of race, religion, immigration status, gender, sexual orientation, income, or ZIP code.”
