Spotlight on Child Care

Child care is critical for supporting Michigan’s families and economy, yet the state continues to have a significant unmet need for high-quality and affordable care. By one recent measure, Michigan is losing out on as much as $2.88 billion in economic activity every year as a result of insufficient child care. This is because we continue to rely on an outdated model for our care sector, one that arose from a system where women–especially women of color–were expected to provide free or cheap labor in order to keep the economy running.
