Each year, the Kids Count Data Book presents national and state data from 16 indicators in four areas — economic well-being, education, health, and the family and community factor. New data released Monday shows that Michigan ranks 34th in the nation when considering the cumulative of all four criteria.

The latest study shows absenteeism is a major issue in the state. Among the 1 in 4 children in Michigan who were chronically absent in the 2021-2022 school year, there were significant disparities by race, with more than half of American Indian and Black children chronically absent.
