League praises House passage of bill that will extend Unemployment Insurance benefits to 26 weeks

New legislation will bring Michigan up to speed with majority of nation, create stability for those with fewer employment opportunities

LANSING—The Michigan League for Public Policy issued the following statement on the Michigan House passage of HB 5827, which would extend the state’s Unemployment Insurance benefits to a maximum of 26 weeks, up from the current 20 weeks. The statement below can be attributed to League President and CEO Monique Stanton.

“This afternoon’s passage of HB 5827 is a strong move toward improving and modernizing Michigan’s unemployment insurance program. The League has fought long and hard with partners in order to bring our system up to speed with the 39 other states that provide up to 26 weeks of benefits.

We know that people don’t stay on unemployment by choice—at the height of the pandemic when the maximum duration of benefits was temporarily extended to 26 weeks, the average claimant used only 14 of those weeks. Michiganders often get back into the workforce as soon as possible—but what’s possible has to do a lot with geography and timing.

What this legislation does is help workers who live in communities where jobs aren’t as plentiful—especially rural areas, areas with seasonal tourism and communities with higher levels of poverty. When benefits run out at just 20 weeks, workers are often forced to take whatever job is available, even if it’s a lower-paying job with fewer benefits, which can have a long-term negative impact on family budgets, housing and food security, and more. This additional six weeks will allow workers to do a really thorough search and find the best position available.

We’re grateful to Rep. Karen Whitsett for introducing this common-sense legislation, and we’re hopeful that the Senate will take swift action to pass it and send it along to the governor.

The League also urges the Legislature to continue improving the Unemployment Insurance program by increasing the maximum benefit, which, at $362 per week, has been stagnant since 2002.”
