Tucked into Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s $80.7 billion budget proposal is a relatively tiny change – $46 million added to Michigan’s Family Independence Program, the only cash-based government assistance program available for the lowest-income Michiganders.

It’s not tiny for anti-poverty advocates.

“This is huge,” said Monique Stanton, CEO of the Michigan League for Public Policy. “For many years, it’s been something that we’ve just not been able to get any type of traction on.”
