Kids Count data shows urgent need for Congress to fully fund Women, Infants and Children program

Northern Michigan has high rates of children ages birth to 4 who depend upon WIC program for the nutritious food they need

LANSING—In light of the uncertainty surrounding long-term funding for the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program, the League has released Kids Count data that underscores the urgent need for Congress to fully fund the program for the postpartum women, babies and young children who depend upon it to thrive.

In 2022, nearly 267,000 Michigan children–almost half of the state’s children ages birth to 4–had the nutritious food they needed because of WIC, and of the 27 Michigan counties with the most WIC recipients, 16 are in northern Michigan.

The Michigan county with the highest percentage of WIC recipients is Baraga County, where 91% of children ages birth to 4 benefited from the nutrition assistance program from 2013 to 2022, followed by Clare County at 83.8%.

Further, the percentage of young children receiving WIC benefits statewide has significantly increased in recent years, going from 41.9% in 2021 to 48.7% in 2022. This is likely due to the end of pandemic-era relief, such as the expanded Child Tax Credit, and it further demonstrates the need to allocate sufficient funding for the WIC program.

“With families continuing to feel the hardships of the pandemic and inflation, adequate WIC funding is critical in preventing hunger and its devastating health impacts on moms and young children,” said Michigan League for Public Policy President and CEO Monique Stanton. “The recently proposed annual funding bills before Congress fall short of meeting the needs of eligible WIC participants and fail to ensure that WIC participants will not be turned away. As Congress works to avoid a shutdown, a downpayment toward full funding of WIC is essential for the growing number of families that it supports.”
