The first quarter of 2023 has made one thing clear: Michigan is putting people first again. It hasn’t been an easy winter for anyone, but we certainly have a lot to celebrate and a lot to look forward to this spring.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has presented a historic budget proposal, and a host of legislation has been signed into law or is headed to the governor’s desk, and it is overwhelmingly positive news for Michiganders who have previously been left out of prosperity and justice.

I have to start with something the League has been working on for over a decade: The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).

The EITC has officially been boosted to 30% of the federal credit! The League has been working hard to make sure the state restored the credit after the devastating cut that was made in 2011. Thanks to legislative leadership, Gov. Whitmer, and over 240 partners around the state, we’ve made it happen!

But believe it or not, that’s not all we have to celebrate. Here are just a few of the other things the League and our partners have applauded since the new legislative session began in January:

All of this, paired with the incredible work that advocates and partners around the state are doing, shows that workers, kids, and families in Michigan are making gains in 2023. And at the League, with your support, we’re doing all that we can to make sure the progress continues.
