Kelsey Perdue, director of the Kids Count in Michigan project for the Michigan League for Public Policy, said 44% of Michigan residents live in a child care desert or an area where there’s not enough supply. Additionally, early child care is not affordable for every family.

“The median family spends 19% of their income on it, and for a minimum-wage worker that number is 54%,” Perdue said.
